The newly appointed Executive Board of Directors of the Fiji Sports Council first met on Tuesday, 14th of March, led by its Chairman, Mr Gilbert Vakalalabure.

The members of the Executive Board are: Chairman Vakalalabure; Deputy Chairman, Mr Peter Mazey; Board Secretary, Mr Joseva Sania; Mr Nouzab Fareed; Ms Della Shaw Elder; Mr Rajesh Singh; Mr Peniasi Sokia; Mr Semesa Karavaki; Permanent Secretary for Finance, Mr Shiri Krishna Gounder; and Permanent Secretary for Youth and Sports, Mr Rovereto Nayacalevu.

The appointees represent diverse backgrounds in sports, business, private sector, and public sector.

The position of Chief Executive Officer will be advertised. Chairman Vakalalabure will act as Acting CEO in the interim.

Speaking in his capacity as Chairman, Vakalalabure said: “The Members of the Executive Board will be guided by the organization’s strategic mission and policies to achieve, as a team, newer and more profitable endeavours.”

“I am looking forward to seeing the transformation in how the Council conducts its business, as well as integrating more sporting activities into our venues.”

Vakalalabure acknowledged the outgoing Board of Directors, who had been at the helm since 2010, led by former Chairman Peter Mazey.

The Fiji Sports Council, under the outgoing Board, was responsible for implementing key capital projects that included the upgrade of the National Stadium, re-development of the Vodafone Arena and FMF Gymnasium, the building of the Council’s Head Office, the upgrade of Lawaqa Park, and the current refurbishment of the Aquatic Centre and National Hockey Centre.

Vakalalabure also acknowledged the demise of past members of the Executive Board- Major Samisoni Kafoa (2015), Malakai Veisamasama (2016), Vijendra Sundar (2020), and Colin Philp (2021), and their contribution.
